I decided my recuperating Mom needed a couple of more days of my fun animal meals to be solid in her recovery from major surgery. I will be here at least through the weekend. So yesterday's breakfast was a Dalmatian Deviled Egg and Pear with blueberry spots. I am out of deviled eggs which have been one of my favorite mediums for my culinary canvas the past three weeks. I gotta talk the mumser into French Toast today. Oh the places I could go artistically with whipped cream!
The big highlight of yesterday (besides the -7 degree real temperature in the morning...who could not be giddy with that???) was taking Mom to the hairdresser. She had become quite shaggy. She had been rushed to the ER on the day of her hair appointment. She was just gorgeous after the hairdresser finished with her. She successfully walked the longest stretch she has had to do since the operation, and didn't fall on the ever-present ice. (Again, I ask, why does anyone choose to live here???)
Anyway, while I was on a run in that delightful sub-zero weather, I was amazed that the streets were almost totally melted and clear. There are piles of snow, as snow falls as regularly as Obama's approval ratings. The temps have only been above freezing one day of the three + weeks I have been here. So how could the roads be clear in the midst of all this snow?
Salt.
Every street is lined with a layer of salt spray and as soon as the sun comes up, the ice and snow melt on the street. Salt saves the day.
I read an article today about aborted baby parts being grafted into animals. The organs can then be harvested as needed. If the sickness of that does not grip you, I urge you to reexamine what it means to be human. We need to be salt here, folks. We need to melt the horror around us, the immoral loss of decency, reverence and understanding of the value and sacred nature of human life, all human life. Salt preserves. Salt prevents decay. And salt melts ice.
We need to be salt that preserves God's word, spreads His message, halts the decay of our culture, and melts hardened hearts that have grown frozen and unyielding to His love. As I jogged over the clear streets, I prayed.

Colossians 4:6
Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.Matthew 5:13-16
“You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people's feet. “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. The Lord says, “See, I am sending an angel ahead of you to guard you along the way and to bring you to the place I have prepared.” Exodus 23:20 (NIV)
