Stating the Obvious

Asherel rolled her eyes as she settled back in the car, when I retrieved her from her first day of Driver's Ed.
"How was it?" I laughed.
"It was all I could do not to say 'You don't say!' throughout the entire class."
"Haha, well they have to assume you know nothing."
She said in a sing-song, pedantic voice, "If a pedestrian crosses in front of you, stop and avoid hitting him. A steering wheel is used to steer the car. Turning the wheel to the right will make the car move right....When you see a stop sign, apply your brakes and bring the car to a halt..."
"Have they shown you any movies yet?"
"No, this was a power point presentation."
"Well you will enjoy the movies. Every awful thing that could happen in a 2 mile span of driving happens. They just want you to remember the car is a potential weapon and you need to be careful."
"Wow, you don't say!"

Sometimes we do really need to be told the obvious, however. Like treat others as you would want to be treated, love thy neighbor as thyself, show kindness and it will be returned to you, don't let the sun set on your anger, do not steal, do not murder, do not covet, do not gossip, do not let bitterness grow, do not fear those who have no power to redeem you immortal soul, but instead fear with a holy fear the One who has the power over all eternity.

"C'mon," said the disciples, "Tell us something we don't know!"
(But I have a mind as well as you;
I am not inferior to you.
Who does not know all these things? Job 12:3 NIV)

"Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them," said Jesus.

"How can we know when a message has not been spoken by the Lord?" (Deuteronomy 18:21 NIV)

"In the same way, good deeds are obvious, and even those that are not obvious cannot remain hidden forever." (1 Timothy 5:25 NIV)

"Believe on you and we will be saved? What kind of simple minded nonsense is that?"

At that time Jesus said, "I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. (Matthew 11:25 NIV)

You don't say!

Galatians 5: 19-25
The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.
