Peace

Yesterday, my daughter, Asherel, and I did our annual shopping for one crystal ornament for my tree decorated all in clear ornaments. It is one of the traditions I love. I remember each ornament we have chosen together with great fondness. I hope one day when she inherits all those ornaments, she will also look back with fondness.

Every morning, I creep out long before everyone is awake, and switch on the Christmas tree lights. I like to sit in the stillness of the morning, reading my Bible devotions, and feeling that all is right with the world. At least for that quiet moment.

It doesn't last. The struggles of the day inch their way across the landscape of my life as the sun rises. The solemn peace of the quiet morning is broken. I can never seem to maintain that feeling of rightness, of calm, of heavenly peace that comes to me when I am all alone in the morning with my Bible. Yet, the Bible assures us that in Jesus, we can and will have perfect peace. Despite tribulation, despite struggles, despite the world, He grants us peace when our minds are stayed on Him.

I watch the crystal ornaments Asherel and I chose together reflecting the Christmas lights, and soak in the promised peace.

2 Thessalonians 3:16

Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times in every way. The Lord be with you all.

John 16:33

I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”

Isaiah 26:3

You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.
