I Should Have Prayed More

Our college stop for this morning is George Mason University. I knew it was near Washington, DC but I had no idea I would hit DC traffic getting to the hotel last night, and would be taking my life in my hand just to visit a potential college for my daughter, Asherel. Had I known, I would have spent a whole lot more time praying...and probably choosing a different college to visit.

As I closed my eyes and swerved across the six lanes of bumper to bumper traffic, I wondered how anyone could stand to live like this day after day. Is any job worth commuting in this madhouse traffic? I was close to tears, and panic, and even my GPS was little use. I swear at one time it said, "Turn left...no right!!!! Not that right!!! Oh, I don't know! Just find an exit and get out of here!" Asherel claims it just told me to turn left in .6 miles.

What have we humans done to ourselves? What is worth this level of chaos, crowds, and wasted moments of a precious life? I sat in the bumper to bumper traffic, feeling like a lemming in a horde of lemmings headed for a cliff none of us could see, but we all knew was coming.

Philippians 3:19 warns us:
They are headed for destruction. Their god is their appetite, they brag about shameful things, and they think only about this life here on earth.

That is how I felt on the Capitol Beltway. We are all headed for destruction. Our concerns are only about life on earth, and we are spending most of it in our car chasing after things that matter not at all. I was so relieved when I got off the Beltway and headed to the relative peace and quiet of a regular busy road, and then the empty parking lot of our hotel. The receptionist greeted me, and handed me a fresh baked cookie and my hotel key. She peered at me, and then handed me another bag of goodies -- bottled water, an apple, and a snack bar.
"Take this too," she said kindly.

Romans 1:26-2:1

And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done. They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness. They are gossips, slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents,

Matthew 7:13-14

“Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.

Ecclesiastes 9:10

Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might, for there is no work or thought or knowledge or wisdom in Sheol, to which you are going.

Psalm 97:2-7

Clouds and thick darkness are all around him; righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne. Fire goes before him and burns up his adversaries all around. His lightnings light up the world; the earth sees and trembles. The mountains melt like wax before the Lord, before the Lord of all the earth. The heavens proclaim his righteousness, and all the peoples see his glory.
