Pray First, Then Act

It was fun meeting my sister Amy in the airport. She came from one direction wearing antlers; I came from the other in a fox hat. Hard to tell we are sisters, huh?

The fox hat was my gift to her. Her name is Amy Fox, and when I saw the fox hat, the day before traveling to see her, how could I NOT get it? Some things God plops in front of us are obvious. Others are not. I prefer obvious, but in general, I don't think God is obvious.

In general, I think He wants us to do a lot of self-examination, and think deeply about what matters. He doesn't want our choices to be flippant. Before any decision of any import, the great heroes of the Bible always prayed first, and ardently sought God's will.

Frankly, I don't do that enough.

If I did, I bet a lot of the things I do, say, or buy would be quashed. Paths would become a lot clearer. Probably harder and hedged with more self-restraint. I tend to act first, and then pray. This is not the proper order...and often leads to regret and repentance.

But in the case of the Fox hat, it was a no-brainer.

Proverbs 3:5-6

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.

If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.

And your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, “This is the way, walk in it,” when you turn to the right or when you turn to the left.
