IF you Survive

We are redoing our guest bathroom. It has not been redone in twenty years. Well, I did remove the old wallpaper and paint it bright yellow a few years ago, but most folks would not likely consider that an improvement. Particularly when I added the rubber ducky accent pieces and rubber ducky shower curtain. Mind you, my kids were all teens or college students by then. I wanted a happy bathroom. Now, I want an adult bathroom.

But first, we had to sand it and prime it, since I neglected to do that when I painted it happy. I was eager to use water-based primer, and sent hubby to Lowes to get it. He returned with oil-based primer. I had been willing to be the painter, but not with oil-based paint. Hubby "volunteered."

For the record, oil-based KILZ is well named. I was sitting in an adjacent room, and almost passed out from the fumes. My husband was felled after an hour. We opened every window, and both of us had headaches and felt a little dizzy.

Hubby finished the job after a nap and some serious concerns about possible brain damage. I went on a walk to suck in fresh oxygen.

The Lowe's salesman had talked hubby into the oil-based KILZ. He claimed it did a much better job than the water-based KILZ...neglecting to tell us this promise only applied IF we survived to enjoy the results.

This is a little like my spiritual journey of late. I would rather take the safer, easier, less noxious route to sanctity. God has other plans. The path He is taking me on involves a whole lot more heartache and struggle than I signed up for.

"It will do a much better job," He insists, "IF you survive."

1 Peter 4:12-13

Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice insofar as you share Christ's sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed.

Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.
