How God Helps Us Understand Him

I needed to set up a bunch of services for a mom I have just started working with who chose life over abortion. The problem is she speaks no English.  Enter the miracle of modern technology: Google Translate.  Both of us texted using Google Translate and fully understood each other.

It was a joy to connect with someone who prior to using this tool was completely unable to talk with me. Immediately I thought of God and how we speak different languages than He. We finite, mortal beings cannot hope to truly understand an immortal, eternal, infinite Being. That's why He sent Jesus. We could never grasp the grandeur of God...or hope to comprehend Him. So He became flesh that we might relate on a level we could understand.

It is a simple truth but so profound. God loves us so much that He sent His son, not only to pay the penalty for our sin, but to give us a bridge to understanding God Himself. Jesus was human and suffered all the temptations of all humans. We can relate to His joys, His struggles, His suffering, and His victories as a man that gives us a glimpse of God's love, mercy, and grace we cannot otherwise begin to comprehend.

When I look back at the texts from the immigrant mom, I see what I have written in a foreign language I can't begin to read. Her responses are in English. One made me smile: "Yup!"
Spelled just like that.
Somehow, she had seemed hard, even a little cold when she would just look at me without comprehending. Now, being able to understand what she was saying, her sweet character was obvious and I realized we would be friends.

Jeremiah 9:23-24

Thus says the Lord: “Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, let not the mighty man boast in his might, let not the rich man boast in his riches, but let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the Lord who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth. For in these things I delight, declares the Lord.”

Philippians 3:10

That I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death,

John 17:3

And this is eternal life, that they know you the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.
