Blessings Upon Blessings

After spending the morning on the sidewalk of the abortion center, I went kayaking. It was a gorgeous warm day (finally!). The photo above is of a great blue heron taking flight when I got too close to him. I love the herons, and see them regularly along the Catawba shoreline. They are a thrill, but not as thrilling as what greeted me when I headed upstream along a section of the river I had never kayaked before.

I looked up and a pair of bald eagles were circling above me. I could not believe what I was seeing at first. No one has told me there have been sightings of bald eagles here! I am constantly questioning fishermen when I kayak if they have seen bald eagles since I am ALWAYS on the prowl for them. The fishermen a few miles upstream told me that once, ten years ago, they had seen them but not recently.

But here, above me, right above me, were a pair of bald eagles!  I shot a video but the eagles are just specks in the sky. I had not been expecting them, nor even looking for them, and out of nowhere, they showed up.

How like God!

On the sidewalks this morning, I was busy training two new volunteers. In the midst of training, I never lost sight of my reason for being on that sidewalk with my wonderful Cities4Life team. If we didn’t speak on behalf of the babies...who would? So the training was interupted continually by calling out to women as they walked from their cars to the abortion clinic, offering them hope in God, and real resources that could change their situations. Most ignored us, but some glanced our way and I knew that seeds were being planted. The pro-choice crowd were particularly mocking and a few people particularly angry. We tried our best to continue to offer help in a spirit of love.

Nonetheless, when a woman walked across the parking lot and straight to us, it took me by surprise. Just like the eagles. It is what we are there for, it is what we always pray and hope for, but it never ceases to amaze and encourage me when it happens.

She went on the RV, chose life for her child, and later told us, “Thank you so much for being here and for not giving up. I am so glad you were here.”

Not giving up.

That morning I had posted a quote on Facebook that I loved: A river cuts through rock not because of its power but because of its persistence.

Don’t give up. Be obedient to God’s call. Ignore the opposition. Look for God. Look for miracles. Keep your eye on the sky where eagles might be circling.

As I kayaked further along the river, one eagle reappeared. He swooped majestically with the characteristic straight wings stretched across the blue sky and then disappeared on the horizon.

Blessings upon blessings this beautiful day.

And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.
