The riders all thanked us. Most of the cyclists, they told us, didn't bother to worry they might spook the horses. Many didn't even slow down. It was such a little thing for us, and made the riders think a little more kindly of cyclists. I felt like a goodwill ambassador of the biking world.
We Christians are ambassadors of Christ to the unsaved world. I hate that I fall so short in being the example I want to be. I take my role seriously as an emissary of the one true God, but I am only human, fallible like all humans, and am sorry for how far short of the mark I fall. I know the world is watching, and every time I fail, or any of us believers fail, the world thinks it is our God who has failed, and why should they trust in Him?
But because I fail, and you fail, and we all fail is exactly why we should trust in Him. There is no other hope. None. He alone doesn't fail, and that's where we should be hitching our unstable wagon.
All the horses who passed us remained calm. We stood quietly, keeping our bikes still. The riders smiled at us, grateful for our efforts.
