What Defines our Existence

I read a little excerpt from CS Lewis today, describing earlier days in his life when petty complaints robbed him of the joy of life. Looking back, through the lens of experience following his wife's death, he realized those were wondrous days that he had not enjoyed as he should have. CS Lewis is certainly not alone in squandering precious moments of life, beauty, love, and joy that we are afforded every moment we are still breathing. It is so easy to focus on what is going badly, on the struggles, and have them define our existence.

Of course there will be struggles. There are always struggles. But there are also glorious sunsets, breezes that smell like lilac, gentle words of affirmation from friends, the sound of an owl high in the tree right above you, women who turn away from abortion mills and choose life. There is always joy somewhere just waiting for you to brush back the dust that has settled from neglect and notice what had been there all along.

Philippians 4:4

Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice.
