Damaged

My Cities4Life friends asked for prayer as they headed to an abortion mill on Hebron -- one I had never been to in my pro-life sidewalk counseling career. They said that only two of them would be there yesterday morning. Two is a very sparse team. Since I had just had the benefit the day before of people pouring out of the woodwork to join me when my regular team was out of town, I told them I would come to Hebron to help.

Hebron is a different experience than the mill to which I normally go to plead for life of the unborn and offer assistance to the moms. Hebron has one small driveway where the cars enter, then a parking lot we cannot go in, and the whole facility is enclosed by a picket privacy fence. We sometimes cannot see the people at all as they get out of their car. We have about 2 seconds to make our plea before they disappear.

With one day under my belt using the sound system, I hurried over to use the microphone at the far end of the fence. I was told that they would hear me in the waiting room. It was strange speaking to a fence. Occasionally I would see pieces of a foot, or movement behind the fence, and preached with renewed vigor. At the mill sidewalk where I regularly work, I have much more time, at least 15 seconds, to see the woman's face as she enters the clinic. I realize now, 15 seconds is an eternity. I spoke till the sound system lost power, and then used fellow worker Flip's portable speaker. Then another, counselor, Danielle, got on the mic, and finally Flip took over. Between the three of us, we talked non-stop for about 3 hours to those women waiting for abortions. At the end of the day, Susan tirelessly pleaded. Like it or not, that captive audience got an earful of the Gospel and the reasons for turning from abortion, as well as the plethora of community and cities4life resources that provide assistance and training through the pregnancy and beyond.

It was beastly hot. Hours melted by with not a single woman pausing to take our literature or listen to our ardent pleas on their way into the mill. We had seen only one person leave in all that time. The abortionist was still not there. All those women were waiting for two or three hours to kill their babies. And while they waited, we counselors begged for the lives of those babies to be spared. We told them of the hopes and promises of following God. A policeman sauntered over.

"Hello officer!" I said cheerfully.
"Have you been putting leaflets on cars?" he asked.
"No," I said.
"Who accused us of that?" asked fellow worker, Flip, "Cause I bet it is someone in there [pointing to mill] and don't you think you want to know that?"
"I would if I were you," I told the officer, "That is a waste of tax-payer money to have you come out to deal with false accusations."
"Oh we get sillier things than that," he laughed.
"And I want to thank you for your service," I said, shaking his hand.
"Nice!" he said, "Firm handshake. I like that."
"Got to be firm," I said, "We are spreading the love of Jesus."
He nodded and moved on.

Having relinquished the mic to Danielle ( I have all the earmarks of a mic hog now that I am not afraid to speak into it....) I headed to the driveway. A car pulled in. I begged them to stop. Lo and behold, they did and a beautiful girl rolled down the window.
"Is this where we get an ultrasound?" she asked.
"No, this is where they kill babies," I said, "But would you like a free ultrasound?"
"Yes," she said.
So I walked her over to the pro-life RV parked across the street and happily introduced her to the nurse. One baby safe from the clutches of death! (This couple was not abortion-minded, but I know from personal discussion with a "save" that the abortion mill has lied about a baby having no heartbeat, and recommended abortion, when that baby was very much alive! Turning from the mill and getting our free ultrasound was still a blessing from God!)

More hours of molten sunshine poured down on us. Still no 'saves'. Then a Fox News reporter showed up with her camera. She wanted interviews of Flip and footage of us in action after the recent Supreme Court ruling that the 35 foot buffer around Massachusetts abortion mills was unconstitutional. The reporter hadn't known there were no such buffers around NC mills. (and these are the folks we rely upon for our information?) However, I showed her the yellow line we couldn't cross because then we were on private property and could get in trouble. She began filming.

She told us to just do whatever it is we do, and pretend she wasn't there. We all went about our regular activity. Danielle held the signs and smiled at passersby, while Susan talked about the message we try to give the women. I prowled along the yellow line watching for any departing women, when I saw one get in her car. I called out to her through my  megaphone, asking her to take our helpful literature on the way out. Like many of the women leaving the mill, she backed up at a speed that would have made the leaflet-hunting officer cringe. Sadly for her, she backed at great force into the car behind her. I quickly took a picture, in case she tried to leave the scene of the crime. She saw that I had seen her and returned inside the mill, after inspecting the broken headlight of the car she had backed into.

The owner of the damaged car came out a short time later. She had been in the mill quite a while, but the abortionist had still not arrived. I hoped she would hear God's unmistakable voice to leave before more than her car was damaged. I called out to her telling her I was a witness, and would give her my name and number. (I didn't tell her that I would also give her Jesus, and the reasons why abortion was wrong.) She nodded and told me she would get it later. The abortionist arrived. Another car pulled out of the clinic parking lot, and I begged the driver to let me talk to her. She rolled down her window.

"Did you get the abortion?" I asked. We have pamphlets that share resources and counsel to post-abortive women who are often grief stricken.
"No," she said looking down. Praise God! I hope that all our hours of preaching over the mic while she waited for Dr. Death to arrive had at least partially helped in obtaining the desired effect!!
"Would you like a free ultrasound?"
"Yes!" she said, brightening.
"Just park behind that RV across the street," I said happily.
Another baby safe from the clutches of death, at least for the moment. She didn't seem completely comfortable with her decision. I knew Danielle, trained to counsel on the RV, would speak Truth to the woman, and that is the best any of us can do.

Finally the woman with the damaged car came out. I assumed she had had the abortion since she had been there all morning, and only now, some time after Dr. Death arrived was she departing.
She was going to drive by without stopping, but I called to her that I had witnessed the accident and surely the insurance company would want to talk to a witness.

She rolled down her window.
"Did you get the abortion?" I asked.
"Oh no, I was just here for birth control pills."
I knew that was not likely as she had been there for at least two hours. I assumed she had had the pill abortion, which can be reversed if the mama gets help within the first 24 hours.
"Oh," I told her, "Well here is some literature in case you ever meet someone who wants an abortion. It explains why that is such a terrible choice with so many terrible consequences. And here is the number to call if they ever want to reverse a pill abortion. Did you know they can do that? And here is a booklet that helps with post-abortive grief...in case you ever meet someone who feels remorse after an abortion. Many women do...and this book can help."
"Ok," she said, taking the literature.
"And here is my name and number...in case the insurance company wants to talk to me."
"Thank you," she said quietly, looking away.

As she drove off, with the damaged car, I thought about how the damaged headlight was of so little consequence compared to the damaged soul that I surmised sat in the driver's seat.

Vicky Kaseorg putting women through a "gauntlet of terror."
(This is the shot of me in the newscast pleading with women to avail themselves of a free ultrasound where they can view their baby and make an informed choice before aborting, and telling them of the multitude of community resources which will help them, and our promise to stand with them in choosing to bring this innocent child into this world...which occurs after the segment about NOW claiming we "harass women" and put them "through a gauntlet of terror.") (I'm just tickled that whatever I was saying made my double chin less noticeable, and my hearing aid wasn't obvious.)
