This photo was taken a couple of days ago. Today, the beautiful Bradford Pear trees are turning green. The blossoms are dropping to the ground sodden in the rain. And also in the rain, soon to be sodden, will be our small group of Cities4Life volunteers. We will be on the sidewalk in front of the abortion center with a task that is mind boggling that it is even an issue. We will be calling out to women not to destroy the child in their womb. We will be offering help and resources, and speaking of God’s love for each and every human being, including that little unborn baby.
Most of the time, I don’t really think of the absurdity of the reason for us being called by God to that sidewalk. Who would think a mother would need anyone to remind her that the womb should never be a dangerous place for a baby, that a mother should never destroy her innocent unborn child, that the right to life of the most vulnerable human beings among us should never be in question?
And the pro-choice crowd calls US crazy??
When God was calling His people out of slavery and bringing them to the Promised Land, He told them to wipe out the Canaanite nation whom they would displace in that land. That nation was known for terrible depravity, cruelty, and sin. One of the greatest abominations before God was their practice of child sacrifice, as well as their utter rebellion and rejection of the one true God. This is a picture of God that some of us try to ignore, but God is not patient with sin forever. There WILL come a day of judgment for all. He would not be holy and JUST if there were no penalty for wickedness.
I like the picture of the Bradford Pear because that gorgeous beauty will be transient. It will pass. And in the midst of all that profusion of glorious flowers is a lamp stand. The light is not shining at the moment because it is a sunny bright day. But as soon as darkness descends, the lamp knows its purpose and shines in the darkness. The beautiful flowers will no longer be seen, but the light from that lamp stand will brighten the path of travelers.
We are to be a light shining in the darkness. Like those beautiful flowers, all of us will pass away, and we will meet our Maker. Will we meet Him clinging to our sin in defiant rebellion, or in repentance clinging to Jesus who paid the penalty we deserved?
As our little band of wet volunteers try to shine in the darkness of the abortion center today, please pray. Pray for God’s message of hope, of truth, of redemption, and of grief over what is happening there to go forth brightly. Pray that the abortion-minded mothers would turn from this path of destruction and turn instead to God.
