Waiting on the Lord At the Gates of Hell

A wonderful story from the sidewalks of Charlotte’s busiest abortion center transpired yesterday. As we were preparing to leave from our morning of ministry there, a woman and her child parked near our RV and came onboard. She was not abortion minded at all, but she was in need of resources to help her in her pregnancy and didn’t know where else to turn.

She spoke very little English. I did not panic. I had JUST downloaded a new app on my phone called Instant Translater for just this purpose. She began speaking broken English and then shrugged with frustration.

“Uno momento!” I said, pulling out my phone. I clicked on the app and asked her what had brought her to us and how could we help? With relief, her eyes lit up as my phone spoke my incomprehensible words in her language. She answered in her native tongue, and my phone told me what she said in English. In this manner, she and I conversed.

I learned that this incredible woman had been urged by friends and family for many years to have a baby, which she wanted, outside of marriage. She was pushing forty, and the biological clock was winding down. She would NOT dishonor God in this way, nor would she settle for a man who was not going to be a good man, a good father, a good husband.

She found him, married, and is now joyfully pregnant with her second baby. Money is tight, but both she and her husband are overjoyed by the new life within her.

Using Google Translater, we talked about God and I shared the Gospel with her. She clearly loved God but had not understood the verses that proclaim “It is by grace we are saved, not by works, lest anyone should boast.” With that cleared up, she smiled broadly. The truth of those verses were freeing and transforming for her. She wanted us to help her find a good church that could feed her grateful soul.

This is not the target population for our ministry. Cities4Life is committed to helping abortion minded women choose life. However, no one else was on the RV, and we were happy to help point  this gracious, grateful woman to many resources she needed. Her eyes filled with delight when she saw her little baby on the ultrasound waving at her.

But all this is not even the most surprising and wonderful revelation.

I asked her how she came to find us, since she was not even aware of the local pregnancy resource centers that could have helped her.

GET THIS:
Her friend, an abortion worker who had recently left the abortion center, told her we would help her. The abortion worker knew where true help would come from and it was certainly not from the “pro-choice” crowd in the abortion center who insist they are all about helping women.

Two amazing truths emerged from this encounter in which  we all can exult.

1. God will open the ears of those who need and seek Him. Even something as basic as understanding each other’s words and meanings will not thwart God’s purposes. We do not need to fear that we will not be understood by those whom God has prepared to hear us when we endeavor to faithfully proclaim God’s truths or extend His love and mercy.

2. Those who humbly seek God will find Him. Those who clamor after truth will NOT be deceived by the enemy of their soul, and God’s purposes will prevail even at the very gates of Hell.

Be encouraged if you are laboring for the Lord and growing weary in the battle. The Lord already won when Jesus rose from the grave. The victory is His. Be patient. Wait on the Lord for His timing, just as that precious woman waited to marry the good man.

We spoke with her husband on the phone to share the good news with him. He thanked us profusely. As the woman got off the phone, she smiled at us. “He is a good man. My life is perfect.”
