This incredibly brave woman made a miracle happen at the abortion center yesterday. I had seen her with one of the moms who was there to abort. We called out to them over and over, but while they glanced at us now and then, they didn’t seem interested. Then the abortive mom went in the center and Mary, the woman in the photo, put her kids in a stroller and started walking down the street, while talking on the phone.
Now, my inclination is to leave someone alone in this situation, but God was prompting me to talk to her. So I did. I hurried up to her.
“Ma’am. Please, I have information that might help your friend.”
To my surprise, she turned to me. She told the person on the phone to hold on.
I told her that we could help with all kinds of resources and mentorship programs no matter what struggles her friend faced.
“I tried,” she told me, “Her mind is made up. It is killing me. I know abortion is wrong but she won’t listen to me.”
“Maybe if you offer her our help,” I told her. “Tell me the issues and I will tell you what we can do to help.”
So she did. I then listed all the ways we could help her friend.
“But she is already in the back room...I can’t go in with my kids.”
“I’ll watch the kids. Go talk with her.”
Again, I was surprised when she agreed.
While she went inside the clinic, I strollered the kids up and down the street. We looked at geese, flowers, and then a scary spider. Mary and her friend came out on the porch. The intense discussion continued. Jennifer, one of our counselors, got on the microphone and began pleading and listing our resources for the next half hour.
The kids were getting antsy. I did my best to distract them from the fact that a total stranger was in charge. They were friendly kids, and we had fun as I pointed out the interesting cracks in the sidewalk, and talked about the glory of God.
Our only other counselors there tried to reach the other women arriving with our literature, and calling out to them. Our sparse team were all busily engaged one way or another while watching Mary and her friend in heated discussion on the sidewalk. We all stopped to pray. Even the kids joined us in prayer.
Then the miracle. Mary returned for her children and her friend drove out of the parking lot. Mary, returning to her children and me, almost collapsed from the battle that had been waged. Her friend would be calling me. The baby was safe. The victory for life was won.
