When Your World Falls Apart, Serve God

A grieving mother volunteered alongside us at the abortion center sidewalk yesterday. She had buried her young adult son two weeks ago. In the midst of her unspeakable pain, she felt the call to minister to others.

She spoke to the moms who would kill their children and pleaded with them not to throw away what she would give anything to have back. She told them she would pray for them, and hoped they would pray for her.

Her voice broke as she said, "I am struggling. I miss him so much. I beg you, don't destroy what God has created."

I cried as I listened to her speak. God had prompted her to be on the sidewalk despite the unbearable pain of being there; a brave woman whose heart was to help others even when her own heart was breaking. These are the people with whom I serve. They humble and inspire me.

I could not get her out of my head. I prayed often for her last night, picturing her quiet somber lonely vigil, hopeful eyes on the doors of the abortion center. If the one she most wanted to see again could not walk out of there through the door of life, perhaps one of the abortion-minded mothers would.

Psalm 34:18

The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.
