Where to Find The Peace That Eludes Us

This picture brings me joy. My mom and dad are in their new home in Arizona which Dad described as the most opulence in which he has ever lived. In this photo, they are sitting on a sun draped patio watching beautiful bubble fountains, and listening to desert birds unlike any they have heard in the northeast. I can tell from the photo that he is feeling at peace. Mom is asleep, so she must be at peace too.

Which conjures thoughts of where we find peace...

I find it kayaking....but it is rarely sustained for long by kayaking. When I return from the river, the real world has a nasty way of shredding peace.

One of the moms I counseled at the abortion center Friday told me she could not find peace anywhere. Whenever she thought she'd found it, new troubles arose. She thought she knew the Gospel, but she had no assurance of salvation or where she would spend eternity. That troubled her as she was very aware of her many sins. (For that awareness, she was closer to peace than many of us, and later, surrendered her life to Christ, believing in His atoning sacrifice on her behalf.) Until then, she didn't really understand that the event we celebrate today-- Jesus crucified for our sins, resurrected, and thus conquering death for all eternity-- is where we find peace.

Eternal peace. We will not find it anywhere else, no matter how opulent or spectacular the setting. No fountain or river will bring us lasting peace. It is through our faith in Christ alone, the living water that we all thirst for deep in our souls. That alone will bring the peace that eludes us here on earth.

Happy Resurrection Sunday. May you all know the lasting peace that faith in Jesus Christ brings.

2 Thessalonians 3:16

Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times in every way. The Lord be with you all.

I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”

Matthew 28: 5-7

…But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; He has risen, just as He said! Come, see the place where He lay. Then go quickly and tell His disciples, ‘He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see Him.’ See, I have told you.”
