A grandmother finds her mission in saving other people's grandchildren |
I LOVE it when someone shows up "just to see" what this sidewalk ministry is all about and God grabs her by the heart. Nancy was one of those people who was overpowered by the truth of her being called by God to this work...only she didn't know it till she stepped on the sidewalk.
I can relate because it was very much my story as well. I will let Nancy share what happened to her that transformed her understanding of the mission of sidewalk counselors.

My heart has been
stirred for many years by the plight of the unborn. And, at various times
in my life, I have been involved in the pro life movement in varying
capacities. So, it was no surprise to me that I was intrigued by Vicky's
blog about the stories from the "sidewalk", and that it became a must
read for me! But, there is a part of my story that did come as a
surprise, even stunned me.
We made arrangements for
me to come to the sidewalk and "shadow" Vicky. I had no prior
knowledge of "sidewalk counseling" and could not have anticipated
what I would see and feel. We arrived about 30 minutes before the center
would open. There were women lined up, waiting to go in and kill their
babies. Lined up!! How could it be? I was stunned! It
is one thing to know and read about abortion mills. It is quite another
thing to see the moms lined up outside the door!
My tears began to fall
and continued throughout the morning. All I could think was, this is
those babies' last chance......Someone has to speak for them!! Could that
someone be me? They have no voices, but their little hearts are
beating! How could I, as a grandmother of 7, almost 8, precious ones not
speak on behalf of these, who are precious in God's sight? Yes, God
convicted my heart that I am to be one of those who come to the sidewalk
and call out to the moms and dads on behalf of their babies.
My heart was also
stirred as I considered the plight of the women in line. What were their
stories? What pressures were they feeling? What lies had they been
told? God sees them, He loves them, He has purpose for them and their
babies. They deserved to hear the Truth. Cities4life is committed
to sharing God's love and forgiveness with these women and men, as well as
committed to coming alongside during their pregnancy and beyond. I am so
thankful for the opportunity to be a very small part of this important work.

Many of our new volunteers are young people, just barely out of the teen years. Nancy is a grandmother, with a wealth of wisdom. The Bible tells us that the older women are to teach and guide the younger. Nancy calls out to the troubled women flocking to the abortion center with compassion and truth, honed from a lifetime of experience. It is astonishing how many roll down their windows as they wait in their cars and listen. Last week, one of those who was listening left the abortion center with her baby safe in her womb where she (and Nancy) knew that child belonged.
